Geography

The Rural Municipality (RM) of Wheatlands #163 is located on the TransCanada Highway (#1) between Caron and Chaplin. The RM location includes Townships 16, 17, and 18, Ranges 1,2, and 3, west of the third meridian. There are over 220 miles of road within the RM. The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) and four pipelines (TransCanada, Conoco, South Saskatchewan Pipeline, and Trans Gas) run through the RM. Fibre Optics communication cable runs through the center of the Municipality. The RM has approximately 226 residents in the Municipality and the Village of Mortlach population is 276. The RM of Wheatlands also includes the Hamlet of Parkbeg. The assessment of the Municipality is $44 million.

History
The Municipality's first meeting was held on February 26, 1910.

Economic Information
Agriculture is the primary industry in the RM of Wheatlands - cereal, oilseeds, pulses, livestock, and livestock feed. The Coteau Hills to the south drop down to the plains and rich growing cropland, and expand northward through sandier and hay/cattle producing land. Young's Seeds is a large seed cleaning plant on the south side of the Municipality, and close to the north side is Haukaas Manufacturing. At present, there are Patterson grain elevators in Parkbeg and Mortlach.

Other Info
The Municipality is home to deer, antelope, and waterfowl, which attract hunters from all over North America. Moose and elk have been known to pass through the area. Besant Park is just east of the municipality. The Village of Mortlach has a school, rink, restaurant, town hall, post office, store, and churches.
