Mosquito First Nation

Geography

Mosquito First Nation is a Nakota/Cree Nation located in the Eagle Hills approximately 30 kilometres (kms)south of Battleford, Saskatchewan. Nearing 50,000 acres in size and boasting over 1000 members, the Mosquito First Nation is thriving.

History
In August of 1878, Chief Mosquito signed an adhesion to Treaty 6 at Battleford after taking over the Band from Little Chief. Grizzly Bear's Head originally signed Treaty 4 under Tepee Hoska at Cypress Hills in 1877. The Band migrated to the Battleford area after Tepree Hoska died in 1882. Both Bands merged in 1951.

After signing an adhesion to Treaty 4, Lean Man Band settled in the Treaty 6 area south of Battleford in May 1882. In 1931 the Lean Man Band's population decreased to a membership of one and was then merged with Mosquito Grizzly Bear's Head.

Economic Information
Mosquito included three Bands: Mosquito Band #109, the Lean Man Band #111, and the Grizzly Bear's Head Band #110 until the Land Entitlement Act was enforced. The total registered population is 1131 with 433 members living on the reserve.

There is a Band-owned gas and convenience store located on the reserve.

The houses on the reserve are owned by the Band.

The Band office is the leading employer for Mosquito First Nation.

Mosquito First Nation is a member of Battlefords Tribal Council (BTC). The BTC was established in 1991 with the incorporation of BTC Management Corporation to serve the Little Pine, Lucky Man Cree, Mosquito, and Sweetgrass First Nations. BTC expanded in 1995 when Moosomin, Red Pheasant, and Poundmaker joined. The BTC is a member of Battlefords Regional Economic Development Authority (REDA).

Attractions

Mosquito First Nation hosts an annual rodeo.

Other Info
There is a health clinic on the reserve for members of Mosquito First Nation.

There is a school that includes nursery to grade 8.

There is a Band hall/resource centre.

For the overall safety of Mosquito First Nation, there is a Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) deatchment located on the reserve.

The Chief and Council at Mosquito First Nation are responsible for overseeing all governance and management at the Band level.
