| Geography | Cabri is located in southwest Saskatchewan, approximately 65 kilometres (kms)/41 miles northwest of Swift Current.
| | History | Cabri, pronounced 'kay'bree', is located in the heart of the North American Flyway and is nature's home to a wide variety of species of wild birds. The Great Sand Hills and the beautiful South Saskatchewan River complement this thriving, Saskatchewan community. Community folklore believes that Cabri's name originated from the early explorer's pronunciation of an aboriginal word for antelope; however, more recent research indicates that the town's name more likely originated from the Latin language: antilocapridae (antelope). Laval University (Quebec) suggests that voyageurs and the French Metis believed the animal resembled a goat; thus, 'Cabri' is the French equivalent for goat.
By 1912, the booming, pioneer community of Cabri had paved the way for several business successes: Cabri supported one hotel, one theatre, two drug stores, two harness shops, three blacksmiths, four general stores, five restaurants, six lumber yards, and by 1918, nine grain elevators had been established.
Incorporated as a town in 1917, Cabri's roots remain in agriculture. Diversified farms and ranches continue to cover the Cabri countryside. Durum production, pulse crops, and elk ranches are found in abundance in the Cabri area. Driving across the Cabri countryside is like taking a trip back in time; one can expect to find many historical treasures like tepee rings, archaeological digs, and the buffalo rubbing stone ¿ just to name a few. To the South of Cabri you will find oilfields, to the North there are gas fields and to the West you will see the Trans Canada Compressor Station.
From past to present, the energetic community of Cabri is committed to keeping their community alive and thriving.
