Rockglen

Geography

Rockglen is nestled in a valley surrounded by hills with rock formations overlooking the Town. The area around Rockglen is one of four, in North America, unaffected by glaciations. Our fossil treasures are not buried under tons of earth and debris. The surrounding hills abound with wildlife in its natural setting.

Rockglen has a population of about 500. It is a quiet place to raise a family or retire. It is a great place for hiking and offers excellent hunting and horseback riding.

History
The range of hills just south of Rockglen is known as 'The Burning Hills'. This name came about when the Sioux Indians (followers and descendants of Sitting Bull) came to this area in search of food. They would hunt for deer during the day and at night they would dry the meat on small fires along the top of the hills. From a distance this gave the impression that all the hills were on fire. Thus came the name 'The Burning Hills'.

With the arrival of the railroad in l926, Rockglen's population increased and was incorporated as a Village in 1927. Elevators were built in l926 and started operation in l927. The population grew to 500 in l957 and so it became a town. The Pioneer elevators closed and were demolished in 1998. The Saskatchewan Wheat Pool elevator closed in 2000. The elevator was purchased in 2002 by Poplar Hills Producers Co-operative Ltd. and is still in operation today.
