| Geography | Shaunavon is situated in the southwest portion of the province at the junction of Highways 37 and 13. The Montana border is 74 kilometres (kms) south of the vibrant community; 163 kms to the west of Shaunavon is the Alberta border. | | History | Shaunavon is a town of many names, with each representing a piece of rich and vibrant history. These names include Bone Creek Basin, Boomtown, and the Oasis of the Prairies.
In 1912, the Canadian Pacific Railway purchased the Shaunavon town site. On September 17, 1913, the CPR offered land for sale and people lined up for days to purchase a lot. Within eight hours, 370 lots totaling $210,000.00 were purchased! Within two months Shaunavon earned its status as a village and one year later boasted a population of over 700 people. Shaunavon became the first community in Canada to grow from a village to a town in under one year.
Prohibition followed in 1917 to 1924. During this period it was illegal to make, sell, or buy any alcoholic beverage, therefore, bootlegging became BIG BUSINESS in Shaunavon. One Bootlegger, Peter Druar, was well known for his home brew. Many a story is told of his enterprising efforts to conceal his operation from the RCMP.
The name 'Oasis of the Prairies', is derived from the beautiful heritage park which is located in the center of town. There is an abundance of spring water supply that nurtures the vegetation growth within the park and town. In 1939, Shaunavon was asked to supply the water for the Royal Train, which carried King George VI and the Queen Mother on a tour across Canada.
| | Economic Information | Shaunavon's major industries, for almost a century, are agriculture, agriculture-based services, ranching, and the oilfield. According to the Statistics Canada Business Registry in 2003, there were 204 businesses registered in the Town of Shaunavon. Sustainable Development: 'Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generation to meet their own needs.' Shaunavon has put an emphasis on sustainable development by the future development of key industries. Shaunavon Business Development Center- was developed to encourage the growth of the regional economy through the development of regional economic opportunities. Cypress Agrienergy-plans to build and operate an ethanol production facility at Shaunavon. Cypress Agrienergy is currently seeking investors for new ownership interests in the company. Pine Cree Cattle Company's-goal is to build a commercial size efficient feedlot that will take advantage of the local low cost feed supplies and feeder cattle to generate long-term economic benefits for the region. The town of Shaunavon has taken the inituative to construct a 10 year plan which consists of futures targets and goals for population and economic growth.
| | Attractions | The Grand Coteau Heritage & Cultural Centre is municipally operated and features a Library, Tourist Information Centre, Natural History Room, Art Gallery, Community Room and Heritage Rooms. Tours of the Centre are provided upon request.
The Rock Creek Golf & Country Club offers a par 36, 9-hole bent grass green course with accompanying grass turf driving range. Rock Creek is open to the public from mid-April to mid-October. Cart and club rentals are available, as well as clubhouse, pro-shop, full bar, and restaurant services.
The Pine Cree Regional Park is located approximately 30 kms from Shaunavon. There are 29 campsites located along the creek. The park features amenities such as barbeques, playgrounds, ball diamonds, and bridges. The Pine Cree Regional Park is truly a rustic get-a-way, as the entire park is non-electrical.
The Shaunavon Rodeo Grounds serve as the backdrop for the annual Shaunavon Pro Rodeo. The Shaunavon Rodeo Association has hosted events, both amateur and professional, for over 40 years. The Shaunavon Pro Rodeo is a CPRA sanctioned event and features many professional competitors that follow the rodeo circuit east from the Calgary Stampede. The Rodeo Grounds are located about 6 km west of Shaunavon on Highway #13.
The Darkhorse Theatre performs two major productions a year, and is well known for producing quality shows. The Darkhorse Theatre uses top of the line production equipment to compliment the set design, wardrobe, and makeup for the major productions. The spring production consists of three pub night performances and the fall production offers six nights of dinner theatre.
| | Other Info | Recreational & Social: Shaunavon has numerous organizations offering sport, culture, recreational and social opportunities including hockey, soccer, curling, figure skating, karate, fastball and baseball, volleyball, basketball, performing arts, and a variety of dance disciplines.
The service groups include: Shaunavon Kinsmen & Kinettes, Shaunavon Legion & Legion Auxiliary, Shaunavon Elks & Royal Purple, Shawnees, Knights of Columbus, Hometown Club, Senior Citizens and a number of church organizations.
Recreational facilities include: a bowling alley, walking trails, Recreation Complex, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, swimming pool, regional library, playgrounds, fitness gym, golf club, rinks, movie theatre, ball park, skating and curling.
Education: There are several educational facilities within the town of Shaunavon. There is one public school enrolling students from Kindergarten to Grade 7, one high school enrolling students from Grade 8 to Grade 12 and one Catholic elementary school enrolling students from Kindergarten to Grade 7. Shaunavon also offers post secondary education via satellite - classrooms, equipment and labs are shared with the high school.
Emergency Services: Shaunavon offers residents emergency 911 service. Emergency services include Shaunavon & District Ambulance, Shaunavon & District Fire Department, and RCMP Shaunavon Detachment.
Health: Shaunavon Hospital and Care Centre offer health services to both inpatients and outpatients as well as long-term facility care. Inpatient services include blood and delivery care, nursing and medical treatment and palliative and acute care. Outpatient services provided are laboratory and x-ray, emergency care treatment and/or diagnostic services.
There are two medical clinics and a pharmacy in the town of Shaunavon.
Cypress Health Region provides services to the community in the following areas: nursing, home management, personal care, respite care, palliative care, public health, mental health, addictions, education, diet, and youth services. Volunteer services include programs such as Meals on Wheels. The Home Care office is located in the Shaunavon Hospital and Care Centre.
Other health related services available within the community include: Dentist, Optometrist, Chiropractor, Physical Therapy, Massage Therapy and Personal Care Homes.
Transportation: Shaunavon's airport has a paved, lighted runway, 3,000 feet in length. The airport has AWAS weather system as well as a global positioning system to assist pilots to their destinations.
A Courtesy Car is operated by volunteers Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
