Maymont

Geography

Maymont is situated on Highway #16, on the twinned portion of the Yellowhead in the Rural Municipality (RM) of Mayfield. The Village is 50 kilometres (kms) south of North Battleford and 95 kms northwest of Saskatoon.

History
The Village of Maymont was incorporated on June 24, 1907. 'It was named for May Montgomery, niece of Mr. McKenzie...a railway construction contractor, who built the line through the area in 1905. Miss Montgomery had asked her uncle to name the Village Montgomery but he said he couldn't because a town in Manitoba had that name. Therefore, he took her first name and the first syllable of her last name and combined them to form the name, Maymont. Until 1930, when the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was built from Saskatoon to Baljennie, Maymont was the market town and shopping centre for the settlers of Spinney Hill and Sonningdale districts. At first, they crossed the river by boat, but in 1907 a ferry service was installed and this was used until the 1970s when a grand new bridge joined the south (river) bank to the north.' (What's In A Name, E.T. Russell, 1981)?

In 1962, a group of Maymont citizens met to plan the development of Glenburn Regional Park. The 'Glen' meaning a narrow secluded valley ¿ also it is half of Glenside, the RM of Glenside that joined the meeting, and 'Burn' after Mike Burns, the original owner of the land where the park is situated. In June 1963, the Park constitution was drawn up and in 1967 the Grand Opening was held.
