Geography

The Village of Paynton is located on Highway #16, 40 miles west of the Town of Battleford. The quaint rural community is in close proximity to Little Pine and Poundmaker First Nations.

History
Settlement began in 1888 by 3 constables retiring from the North West Mounted Police (NWMP). Paynter, McCready, and Shields homesteaded in the area and soon became prosperous farmers. In 1903, the Barr Colonists settled in the area and in the following two years 200 more homesteaders settled in the area. In 1905, the community organized to form a Village.

The Village was originally named Paynterton a combination of Paynter, an early settler, and Thornton, a prominent Barr Colonist. Postal officials modified the Village name to its present form. In 1905, with the coming of the CN Rail line, the Village expanded. The first store in the Village opened in 1904 and soon, others followed. In 2003, the Village of Paynton hosted a homecoming event to celebrate its 100th Birthday.

Paynton was the home of five-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier and 1995 Canadian steer wrestling champion Todd Boggust. He became very well known on the international rodeo circuit before passing away in 2001.
