Pennant

Geography

Pennant is located in southwest Saskatchewan, approximately 46 kilometres/29 miles northwest of Swift Current.

History
The Village of Pennant is located in the centre of the Rural Municipality of Riverside #168. In 1911 the Canadian Pacific Railway began building a line from the main line west of Swift Current forming a junction point named Java, and continuing as far northwest as Empress, Alberta. The Village of Pennant was incorporated in 1912 and named `Pennant' when a surveyor found a pennant, or small flag, dropped by one of the construction workers at the site. Later when they named the streets, the main street became `Standard' meaning flag as well as `Banner', `Burgee', and `English' all pertaining to a flag. `Halyard' was named after the rope used in hoisting the flag. The avenues became `Railway', `Saskatchewan', and `Prairie'. The first settlers are believed to have arrived in the area in 1901.

With the arrival of the railway, the village's mentality was vibrant as it served a district bordered on the south by the Sand Hills and served an area as far north as the Matador Ranch. Several stores opened in the village including: a general store, a hardware store, a restaurant, a hotel, and a few competing stores. The Village continued to grow in the years ahead.

The residents always showed true community spirit when it came to celebrating milestones. The residents took time out of their busy lives to come together, by putting on parades for anniversaries and special events. The community came together for sports days as the village was home to a track, baseball diamonds, and a sports field.

Classes were first taught in the Presbyterian Church. The first school was built in 1913. It was a two-room brick structure. As the population of students increased, there were two more rooms added to the existing building.

Today you can find the area dotted with pump jacks and oilrigs; this has become a familiar site in southwest Saskatchewan.
