Douglas No. 436

Geography

The Rural Municipality (RM) of Douglas No.436 is comprised of 9 townships in 3 ranges. The area extends 4 miles south and 14 miles north of Highway #40. The RM landmass begins 15 miles east of North Battleford and continues for approximately 18 miles. The Villages of Richard and Speers, where the municipal office is located, and the Hamlets of Lilac, Keatley, and Alticane are located within the RM.

History
The RM of Douglas was incorporated 10 December 1909. A community history book with narrative provided by residents of the Village of Speers recounts memories of the first settlers in the area. Area history is also preserved on a bell tower in the Village of Speers where the names and locations of earlier school districts are scripted. As well, a plaque commemorating Reeves, Council Members, and Administrators who have served over the last century is displayed at the RM office.

Economic Information
Agriculture is the main industry for the 425 residents in the RM. In addition to several mixed farms, the RM is home to two large hog operations, a seed cleaning plant, and an agriculture chemical/fertilizer supplier. Within the last 5 years, a significant portion of RM land has been claimed by First Nations through the Treaty Land Entitlement process.

Attractions
Attracting many sightseers to the RM of Douglas is the natural oddity known as the 'Crooked Bush'. It is found 15 kms northeast of Hafford. Although much testing has been conducted on the soil, trees and growing condition, the twisted trees and abnormal growth pattern remain a mystery.
