History
Situated in the heart of the wide-open Saskatchewan prairies and home to a wealth of sunshine, living skies, and rolling hills, is a special place where families once gathered to celebrate possibility and promise in a country that seemed to offer endless opportunities. In the early days, residents in the Rural Municipality of Lawtonia enjoyed a quiet life unbeknownst to the chaos and commotion of today's world.
The RM of Lawtonia #135 was incorporated in 1911. It has been suggested that the Rural Municipality took its name on the advice of Mr. Edward Grainger. Upon arriving in Canada, Edward Grainger found work on a farm near Pense for a farmer named Lawton who had a daughter named Katy. Apparently the young girl made such an impression on Mr. Grainger that when it came time to find a name for the municipality, he suggested Lawtonia.
The threat of World War One was looming when the much welcomed railroad came steaming through the RM of Lawtonia in 1931. The railway line had already reached the community of Vanguard by this time allowing farmers to choose between traveling to Vanguard or Morse to sell their wheat crops.
By 1915, the Machine Age had made its presence known as the Municipality of Lawtonia was one of several that petitioned the government for a rebate on the money collected for automobile licenses. The money was to be paid to the Municipality of Lawtonia for road construction.
The Rural Municipality of Lawtonia Council looked to the Village of Hodgeville for assistance in 1921. Hodgeville was the only community in the municipality that offered both banking and postal facilities; therefore, a motion was passed making Hodgeville the centre of the municipality's business activities.
