Geography

Hazlet is located in southwest Saskatchewan, approximately 65 kilometers northwest of Swift Current. We have a population of 126 in our vigorous village and a total of 291 in and around our surrounding area. We are a thriving farming community, full of activity and friendly community support, offering a safe and comfortable lifestyle.

History
The geology of the Hazlet region started between 135 and 65 million years ago when the underlying bedrock deposited, in the Cretaceous period. This is the sedimentary layer covering still older rock, and is the thickest system of rock in the province. This is the layer of rock that contains much petroleum and natural gas. Where this layer is exposed, we find dinosaur fossils such as the triceratops and mosasaurs, which indicate that this area was once swampy.

The water running from the ice front as it is melted off this region approximately 13,000 years ago laid down the Great Sand Hills and many gravel pits. Features such as Standing Rock were dropped from the melting ice. Because this region was very dry, wind became a major factor, blowing the fine sands into dunes. These dunes later stabilized with vegetation, and this is what we see today in our Sandhills.

In 1878, Isaac Swan Hazlett was born in Ireland. He arrived in Canada in 1903, and by 1908 was one of the first settlers to turn the prairie sod in our district. Mr. Hazlett's name was chosen for the first post office and also for the name of the school. When the town of Hazlet was started, the name of the school was changed to Trent.

Economic Information
Hazlet's economy is driven mostly by agriculture, raising cattle/bison, and energy including oil and natural gas. Oil and gas exploration certainly provides a substantial economic contribution to our village and surrounding area. We are also very proud to have our school be involved in an international school program, where we host students from other countries, who desire education with English instruction, this also contributes to our economy.

Attractions
Obviously, Standing Rock is one of our most well known attractions. Our community has several annual events that we can also consider attractions. Every Father's Day weekend, we have our 'sports day weekend', which includes our every-popular Sand Hills Relay, slow pitch tournament, a parade and a Sunday evening pit beef BBQ in the park. Our beautiful regional park, 3 miles from the village, is a wonderful location for bird watchers, family picnics and short hikes. Across from the park, you can admire our nine-hole golf course that is quite a challenge.

Hazlet is proudly the home of the famous Sandhills Players, and usually entertains semi-annually. We offer two dinner theatres, an evening performance and a Sunday Matinee. Local actors will surely provide you with an experience you are sure to remember.

Other Info
Hazlet has a school, a grocery store, a Credit Union bank, a service station and garage, a post office, a fitness gym, and a United church. We also have ball diamonds, curling and skating rink, and a local cafe and library.

We are a very active community and have many community groups such as Cubs, Scouts and Beavers, Ladies UCAL, Hazlet Lions, two book clubs, and the Hazlet Legion. We curl most of the winter away, which gives us a wonderful opportunity to visit with our neighbours and friends. We have ladies and mens golfing starting in the spring and the kids play ball all summer long.
