| | History | Howling winds may be common to Saskatchewan, but traveling through the Southwestern corner of the province may lead to the discovery of some of the most spectacular wonders. One of the many wonders of Saskatchewan, found in the RM of Riverside, is the Great Sand Hills. The Great Sand Hills is an amazing sight that can only be fully experienced when one visits this magnificent location.
Although the area of the RM of Riverside was staked out by 1885, the municipality housed few residents prior to 1905, with the exception of the ranchers who located along the South Saskatchewan River, the Miry Creek, and in the Sand Hills. Homesteaders travelled to the area in the early 1900's. At such time a 160-acre homestead could be purchased for $10.00. In order for a family to begin improving their living quarters, it was necessary for them to break at least 10 acres of land per year with three years worth of duty required. It was necessary that the homesteader live on the land for at least six months of the year and that he construct a shack worth $100.00 during these three years.
In 1911, the Empress Branch of the Canadian Pacific Railway was constructed through part of the district. The local farmers started a petition to create some form of local government. Later that same year, an order in council by the provincial government formed the Local Improvement District No. 168. The district's first official meeting was held on January 2, 1912 in Pennant, Saskatchewan. The boundaries of the original L.I.D. No. 168 have remained unchanged and are the boundaries of the RM of Riverside today.
On August 29, 1945, a resolution was passed to establish a health region encompassing the whole municipality. Health services to be provided included public health, medical services, access to hospital, as well as any other health services considered necessary by the health board of the region.
The Great Depression of the 1930's led many local farmers to experience crop failure; however, encouraged by the discovery of oil in January 1953, the RM of Riverside took a turn for the better. The discovery well, Socony Western #1 at Fosterton, proved to be a key find. The flat prairies once settled by pioneers, are now dotted with pump jacks.
