Blaine Lake

Geography

The Town of Blaine Lake is located 80 kilometres (kms) north of Saskatoon on Highway #12.

History
Originally populated mainly by Anglo-Saxons, East Europeans, and Americans the community quickly grew to include many Slavic families. The rural area near the North Saskatchewan River was settled in 1899 predominantly by the Russian Doukhobors and remained so until the influx of settlers began in 1907. In 1885, a small settlement was started at what is now the junction of Highways # 12 and 40. A rush of settlement began in 1899 when large numbers of Doukhobors arrived from Russia. They arrived at Petrofka, south of the present town, in August and at once began preparations to survive through the winter, digging dugouts in hillsides and river banks. Some French pioneers came in 1902 from Brittany and this group settled on land close to where the town stands. The town is located on land formerly known as the William Johnston homestead. When the railway came through in 1911 the settlement was named Blaine Lake after a lake three miles west, which in turn, had been named after a land surveyor Mr. Blaine, who had drowned in it.
