| Geography | Milestone is favourably located on Highway #39 midway between Regina and Weyburn, both 56 Kilometres (kms) away. Milestone is 72 kms from Moose Jaw and 112 kms from Raymond, the 24-hour United States (U.S.) Port of Entry. Highways No. 39 and No. 6 serve the community with access to all locations. The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) Soo Line connects Moose Jaw, Regina, and Minneapolis to the south. Minneapolis is connected to all major transportation systems in the U.S. In addition, CN Rail is located in nearby Regina and Weyburn. The Regina International Airport served by major airlines is just 35 minutes away.
| | History | Milestone is located in the heart of the beautiful Regina Plains, an area famous for vast tracts of land, open skies, and abundant sunshine. The region is known as the breadbasket of the world. In 1907, the crop year for District #2 (known as the Milestone, Francis-Rouleau, Weyburn District) produced 8,003,932 bushels of grain. Production in 1906 was marginally less. The Town was named in honour of C.W. Milestone, superintendent of the New Soo Line Extension in 1893. Long before its incorporation as a Village in 1903 and later as a town in 1906, Milestone had developed into a thriving community. The Soo Line Railway extension was completed through Milestone in 1893. At that time, the area was known as the 'Dry Belt' as the region south of Regina was set down in 1857-58 by Captain Palliser, as being included within the boundaries of the 'Great American Desert'. Prior to 1898 several ranchers had established themselves, included were 'The Hugh Armour' and 'Mowatt Brothers' ranches where at one time the latter handled about 2,000 horses. The first sod was broken by rancher Egerton, 4-5 acres seeded to oats in 1896. The first homesteads were filed in 1898 by two section-men, John and Thomas Barmby.
| | Economic Information | While agriculture is the primary industry a number of related services and industries are available. Seed Cleaning and Pulse Plants, small manufactures etc. Milestone offers a large industrial park area, which is situated on the southern side of town. Milestone's hub-like location renders it a superior trading centre. Within a 40-mile radius, Milestone avails itself to more than 250,000 people - consumers, professionals, tradespersons, government representatives, neighbours, and friends. Highways No. 39 and No. 6 serve the community with a 24-hour average volume of 2,500 vehicles from Highway 39 west and 2,200 vehicles from Highway 39 east. Highway No. 6 provides a daily average of 650 vehicles.
| | Attractions | A high quality of recreational activities and facilities are available in Milestone. A source of pride to the community is the recently completed Milestone Recreation Complex which houses two artificial ice surfaces for skating and curling. The multi-purpose facility hosts a variety of activities year round including trade fairs, art show, conventions, school activities (including graduation) with its regular winter programs of hockey, figure skating, and curling.
The annual Milestone Indoor Rodeo sanctioned by the Canadian Cowboys Association is held in facility. Each April this event attracts hundreds of participants and spectators to Milestone.
An impressive sports park with 5 permanent ball diamonds and one temporary, complete with a concession booth, and restrooms is located adjacent to the facility.
The recently renovated and improved swimming pool with a playground adjacent to the campgrounds are open all summer for everyone's enjoyment.
For folks enjoying the camping scene and great outdoors, two nearby regional parks provide a host of recreational activities. Dunnet Regional Park is just 15 minutes away and Nickel Lake Regional Park is 65 kms from Milestone. A short drive from Milestone are the 'Badlands' or the 'Blue Hills' exposing 70 million year old rock, similar to and second only to those found in the Montana/South Dakota area.
If golf is your game, there are two 18-hole champion courses within minutes of Milestone. The courses are fully irrigated and landscaped with complete pro-shop service available. Long Creek Golf Course is only a 20-minute drive and the Weyburn Golf Course is 30 minutes away. There are also a number of courses only minutes away in nearby Regina.
Milestone offers a broad assortment of social and cultural activities. The community is the proud home of the internationally famous 'Milestone Prairie Players' an acting troupe that has distinguished itself by winning numerous provincial drama awards and representing Canada at the Dundalk International Festival and Competition in Dundalk, Ireland. The Milestone Prairie Players are annually featured at the Milestone Elk's Dinner Theatre which had its start in 1985.
