Goodwater

Geography

The Rural Municipality (RM) of Lomond No. 37 is located in South Central Saskatchewan, just south of the City of Weyburn. The municipality is a standard nine-township municipality. Highway No. 35 runs north and south throughout, with the '705 Grid' running east and west across the municipality.

The municipality is in close proximity to three regional parks - Nickle Lake to the north, Mainprize to the east, and Oungre Memorial to the south.

The topography of the municipality is generally flat with the exception of the Missouri Coteau hills lying just west of the municipality and a small section called 'The Valley of the Rocks', on the very east side of the RM.

The Hamlet of Colgate and the Village of Goodwater are both located within the municipality.

History
The municipality was officially incorporated in 1911. The area has always been a prosperous cattle and grain producing region. In the 1950s oil was discovered and this has lead to increased employment for the local people as well as residents from surrounding communities.

Both the Village of Colgate and Goodwater were also incorporated in the early 1900s. With the advent of a decrease in population, the Village of Colgate was amalgamated with the RM of Lomond in 2000. Originally the Village of Goodwater was named 'Juell'. With the advent of the CN Railroad constructing the railroad through the municipality, water was discovered at a very shallow depth, and the Village of Juell was renamed to the Village of Goodwater. Goodwater continues to hold Village status.

Economic Information
The municipality enjoys a diversified economic base. In addition to the standard agricultural practices of cattle and grain farming that are present in most Saskatchewan areas, the municipality is also home to EnCana Resources' oil fields. Approximately 50 different oil companies operate over 1,100 oil wells within the municipality. EnCana Resources operates a massive 'Water Injection' facility and a world class CO2 injection facility.

Along with all the various oil activities, come several services industries that support the oil industry such as trucking firms, well servicing contractors, etc. The municipality would make a good home for any business that is connected with agriculture and/or oil industries.

Attractions
As previously mentioned, the municipality is in very close proximity to Regional Parks, and in particular the Rafferty Reservoir (which has been named one of the best Walleye fishing lakes in Saskatchewan). EnCana Resources' oil field facilities are studied by oilfield professionals and universities from throughout the world. Both of the urban centres of Goodwater and Colgate enjoy golf courses, ball diamonds, and community halls and these facilities can be used for a very nominal charge. Lots in both Goodwater and Colgate can be purchased for a very nominal fee should you be interested in living in a small town atmosphere.
