Limerick

Geography

The Village of Limerick is located within the boundaries of the Rural Municipality (R.M.) of Stonehenge No. 73 at the junction of Highways 13 and 358 in south central Saskatchewan, approximately eighty miles southwest of Moose Jaw. The current population of the village is 146.

History
The Village of Limerick was incorporated in 1913 following the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1912. The first homesteader in the district was Edward Lossing who had immigrated from Limerick, Ireland and had named the railway station Limerick. After a gathering of council in 1913, it was decided to also name the village Limerick and following surveying, the streets in the village were given Irish names such as Galway, Shannon, Kerry, and Killarney.

The pioneers brought culture, physical and intellectual vigor, a spirit of adventure and a love of freedom - the essence of which make a democracy such as ours, a living reality. The village grew rapidly, with elevators, houses, business places, stores, a hotel and café.

The World War I years came and the town plunged into war work. Victory Bonds were sold and Red Cross work was organized. Limerick was the first to go over the top in a Red Cross Drive, and contributed almost twice as much as some older and larger towns. The Honour Roll gives testimony to the number of enlisted men in the community. In 1939, war was declared again and it is estimated that Limerick sent more officers overseas than any other village of comparable size in the province.

Economic Information
Limerick has a wide variety of businesses/services such as groceries, banking, hotel, restaurant, bar, photography studio, massage therapist, post office, mechanic, gas station, hardware, chemical/fertilizer supplier, autobody shop, elevator, contractor, eavestrougher and 2 private day care services.
